What makes the hotel great?
Choosing a hotel for a business trip or vacation is a big deal. You want the best place you can get, no one wants to be stuck in a dirty, painted place where you can’t even find it safe to sit on the bed let alone get in. But how do you know which hotel is a good hotel? It’s not really about the size of the room or the size of the towels, but instead most people would agree that it’s the little things that make a hotel feel like home.
If the hotel staff is helpful, friendly, and shows a lot of hospitality, then you know you’re in the right place. It also helps of course that the lobby is well lit and clean as this is a prelude to things to come. If you can check in without a hitch and your key card already works in your room, you’re in business. Reckless check-ins and key cards that won’t let you into your room, pool, gym, etc. are not good enough in this day and age.
Next is the site. If you’re going on vacation to a specific place, like an amusement park or a monument, you’ll want a hotel close enough that you’re not traveling for hours on end once you get to your destination. Fortunately, with the internet, you can research where hotels are in relation to where you want to go before you leave home.
Then there are the amenities, those things that make your stay more enjoyable and home-like. We’re talking clean comfortable beds, lots of nice things in the bathroom to use, good amount of towels, coffee and tea in the room, clean cups and mugs, decent TV and free WiFi. The in-room microwave and refrigerator are also great amenities, especially if you’re traveling with kids, but it’s also great for keeping your leftovers and reheating them later when you get hungry.
With online reviews, you can get a pretty good picture of most of the hotels on your list. And with so many competing chains striving to be bigger and ultimately better than their competitors, that’s great news for us, the travelers, and the people actually staying in the rooms.
Another good thing to look out for are the perks hotels offer to repeat guests. Play your cards right and you might get a free night!
