Travel tips – Top ten beach picnic spots

America’s best places for beach picnics range from dramatic cliffs to tropical aquamarine lagoons, but they all have one thing in common—they’re absolutely perfect for al fresco seaside dining. Pack a picnic basket, sunscreen and flip flops and take a trip to these amazing places for the best outdoor meal of your life!

Siesta Key, Florida – This island off the coast of Sarasota is one of Florida’s best kept secrets. Long a favorite vacation destination for Aboriginal people, this island is blessed with warm waters, cool breezes, and an impressive variety of animal life. Watch for pelicans, egrets, ibis, storks, cranes, dolphins and manatees over your picnic meal. The beach also has concession stands, volleyball courts, a softball field, and a playground.

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts This family-friendly beach is located along the 30-mile Cape Cod National Seashore, accessible by foot, bike, or car. The eroded ice cliffs provide a dramatic sight, along with crashing waves and the occasional seal. If you’re not fond of sand, you can sit on the green, grassy hills above the beach and admire the royal blue waters.

Kaanapali, Hawaii – Multiple sand bars provide a cool, peaceful place to set up a lounger and enjoy some snacks while the waves gently crash at your feet. This beach is located on the sunniest and driest side of Maui and has some of the best swimming spots in the state.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina – Take a scenic ferry ride from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to beautiful Ocracoke Island, which is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This island was the favorite anchor of the famous pirate Blackbeard, who died in a channel off the coast. Feed the seagulls, take a leisurely stroll around the village or visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse, one of America’s oldest lighthouses.

East Hampton Main Beach, New York – Although the Hamptons are known for their rows of multi-million-dollar mansions and upscale boutiques and restaurants, East Hampton Beach has retained a charming small-town feel — no small feat considering it’s a sprawl of Brooklyn and Queens. This beautiful beach is a perfect coastal picnic spot for Manhattan residents who need a break from all the hustle and bustle.

Ocean City, Maryland – If you’re looking for fun for the whole family, Ocean City is the perfect beach picnic destination. There is so much to do, you will have a hard time deciding! The oceanfront boardwalk, swimming, surfing, kite surfing, water skiing, and windsurfing are just a few of the activities you can do during your visit.

Cannon Beach, Oregon – Take an afternoon to free yourself from your usual hectic pace and enjoy this quaint seaside village, located 80 miles west of Portland. Brush the beach for seashells, ride a tricycle on the sand or just take in the amazing scenery. The main attraction of this beach is “Haystack Rock”, which is said to be the third largest free-standing monolith in the world.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware – Delaware’s largest seaside resort, Rehoboth Beach features a gorgeous sparkling sandy beach, a one-mile boardwalk, a variety of outdoor activities, and plenty of perfect picnic spots. Stop by one of the plentiful casual seafood restaurants for some delicious bites, and enjoy them while relaxing quietly in the sun.

TH Stone Memorial Saint Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida – Winner of multiple ‘Best Beach’ awards, this may be the most idyllic beach on the mainland. Located along the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, this state park features miles of shimmering white sugar sands, high dunes, and sandy pine scrub. It’s an excellent example of the beauty of “Great Northwest Florida,” and offers plenty of opportunities for bird-watching—more than 240 species have been spotted in the park. During warm summer nights, sea turtles can be seen making their way to the beach to nest.

Hamoa Beach, Hawaii – This area has been called the best beach in the world. It truly is a picturesque tropical paradise – the crystal turquoise waters, palm trees and white sands will make you wish you could stay there forever. Picnic facilities abound in this area, or you can curl up on a soft, cozy picnic blanket and take in the sights and smells of this delightful setting.
