The currency in Barbados is the Barbados or Bajan dollar. It is 1.98 USD. So $20 in Barbados is about $10, give it or take a little bit.

cost of goods

Items and services in Barbardo are not cheap. They are about the equivalent of the items or services in the United States.

Travel to and from Barbados and while there

When you arrive in Barbados at the airport and claim your bags, you will exit the terminal to buses, taxis and shuttles. It is best to arrange a shuttle to and from your hotel in advance. A taxi ride from the airport will cost between $20 and $60 depending on the distance to the hotel and the size of the taxi you need. The bus will charge for surfboard bags and some other large oversized items. Pay no more than $5.

If you rent a car, it will be about $50-60 per day. Don’t let anyone charge you more than that. If you are from the United States and plan to rent a car while in Barbados, keep in mind that you will have to drive. This may sound simple but the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car and the cars are driving on the wrong side of the ride. This takes a little getting used to but is also a great adventure!

Barbados is a British colony island and thus embraces British conservatism in dress. The daytime dress is a casual tropical beach wear. At night and at dinner, the men wear trousers and shirts with collars, and the ladies wear dresses and skirts. Because of the weather it is best to be of lightweight material.

Barbadians, or Bajans as they are referred to on the island, wear casual clothes most of the time. Business attire in town is the norm for the locals and there are many men in ties and even jackets.

When dressing to go shopping, beach clothes are not appropriate. Swimwear and swimwear are reserved for beaches and beach bars.

eat the food

There are some great restaurants in Barbados. Cliff Restaurant is one of the most beautiful restaurants on the island. The view, as you would guess from the name, is fantastic. The restaurant is located on the side of a cliff overlooking the ocean.

At St. Lawrence Gap, Bellini is awesome. It’s right inside a cove with small boats and it’s amazing at sunset. Salmon is my favourite.

Most hotels will have a book about the restaurants on the island in their lobby area or at the concierge desk. It will have a picture of the restaurant and the menu with prices. This is a great way to choose some of the places you would like to eat during your stay.

There is a large selection of hotels to choose from. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

If you’re looking for a bargain, try Sandy Bay Beach Club. The hotel itself is nice enough, 3 stars. But the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the beach in front of the hotel is probably the best on the island. It’s all inclusive so all meals, alcohol, gratuities, and non-motorized sports are all included. This makes it an excellent deal.

The Hilton is a great hotel located on a peninsula so the view from every window is crystal blue water.

This hotel has all the amenities, valet parking, room service, diving excursions, restaurants, bars, spa, pool, kids programs, everything you could possibly need.

It is a beautiful hotel and if you have some money to spend on a nice vacation then this is the resort to choose. You don’t actually need to leave the hotel often. You have the views, the pool, and the beaches while enjoying all the amenities of the hotel just steps away.

Sandy Lane Hotel is the place to stay if cost is not a concern. It is the location of Tiger Woods wedding and it is breathtaking.

This hotel is amazing. It is by far the most luxurious hotel on the island. You name it and it’s over. Spa, golf, horseback riding, 5 star dining, concierge service, luxury sedan from the airport. They will have it or find it for you.

Room rates range from $850 to $10,000 per night.

Snorkeling with turtles and shipwreck

Boat trips and snorkeling boats are available around the island. The Snorkel Turtle trip was nice but you may or may not see turtles in the water. Be aware that you may see some of the boat.

The shipwreck snorkeling is beautiful. There are a lot of colorful fish and clear water. There’s an old shipwreck and then a newer man-made shipwreck where they sank a party boat, not original, but draws in some exotic marine life.

Wildlife Sanctuary

If there is one thing to do in Barbados, go to the Wild Life Reserve. It is located at the northern end of the island and you can take a 4×4 Adventure Tour, taxi or rent a car. Entrance to the US costs $13 and is worth 3 times the price.

When you walk in there are large turtles everywhere. The sanctuary does not have cages in the main area. Only the pythons, the giant python and the iguana are locked in a separate area. Monkeys, rabbits, and other wildlife run free. The reserve is heavily shaded by rainforest trees and vines that overhang and provide swing tools for monkeys. You walk through the reserve on brick lanes. There’s even an alligator in a pond, with high rock walls so he can’t escape.

It is a unique experience and something not to be missed.

Atlantis submarine trip

They offer discounts including some two to one booking deals. That’s $90 for two people instead of $180.

Other attractions on the island include rum tasting, caving, golfing and horseback riding.

Important travel tips:

Check the weather before you travel so you know how to pack

– Find and claim your unclaimed money to get extra spending money for your trip!

Use of traveler’s checks. If lost or stolen, it can usually be replaced within 24 hours, from virtually anywhere in the world by most banks, service organizations, and a large number of merchants.

– Do not leave value in your hotel room or if you choose to activate and use the safe in the locker.

Don’t call home from the hotel room. There are stores you can walk into and call from their computer, use a handset to talk and call home for $0.50 a minute. The hotel will charge you $5.00-35.00 to drop you off and then $2.90-7.90 per minute! If you use your cell phone, it can cost you $2 to $5 per minute.

– Travel with cool people and have fun!
